Two key accused arrested in Dhubri constable assault case

Selim SK, Dhubri: In a significant breakthrough, Dhubri police on Friday arrested two individuals—Mahibul and Montu Ali—who had been on the run after allegedly assaulting a police constable in front of the Dhubri Sadar Police Station earlier this week. The violent incident unfolded a few days ago following the arrest of the guardian of a ward member candidate from the Ironjangla area under the Bhashanichar Village Panchayat. The individual was taken into custody on drug-related charges. In the aftermath, a group of the candidate’s supporters launched an unprovoked attack on police personnel stationed outside the Sadar Police Station, leaving a constable injured. While several of those involved in the altercation were detained soon after the attack, the two main suspects, Mahibul and Montu Ali, had managed to evade arrest. However, acting on a specific intelligence input, Dhubri police carried out a special operation on Friday that led to the successful apprehension of the duo. Police have booked the accused under multiple sections of the newly introduced Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 217/25, 61(2)(a), 189(3), 126(2), 132, 121(2), and 109(1). Officials confirmed that investigations are continuing to uncover the broader network possibly involved in the assault and connected drug activities. The Dhubri police have reiterated their zero-tolerance stance on violence against law enforcement officers. A senior police official stated, “Such acts of aggression against our personnel will not be tolerated. We remain fully committed to ensuring justice and maintaining law and order in the district.” The arrests mark a crucial development in the case and are expected to aid further in dismantling any criminal nexus behind the incident.
