Dibrugarh: A massive wave of protest swept through Dibrugarh today as thousands of tea tribe and Adivasi community members took to the streets, renewing their long-standing demands for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, land rights, and an increase in daily wages.
The rally, jointly organised by the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS), Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA), All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA), Assam Chah Janajati Mahasabha, and 36 allied organisations, witnessed a massive turnout, making it one of the largest public mobilisations in recent months.
Protestors carrying placards and banners gathered at multiple assembly points — Murlidhar Jalan Bus Terminus, Mancotta Playground, and Barpathar Playground — before marching in unison to Chowkidinghee Chariali, where the central protest meeting was held. The streets of Dibrugarh resonated with slogans demanding justice, dignity, and recognition for the tea garden community.

Leaders from the participating organisations accused the government of failing to deliver on its promises regarding ST status and fair wages, despite repeated assurances. They also reiterated the urgent need for granting land pattas to thousands of tea garden workers who have been living on company-owned land for generations.
Speakers at the rally warned that if the government continues to delay action, the movement will intensify across Assam in the coming weeks.
Today’s protest, marked by disciplined participation and passionate speeches, underscored the deep frustration among Assam’s tea tribe and Adivasi communities — groups whose contribution to the state’s economy remains unmatched, yet whose basic rights continue to hang in the balance.
