Prof. Gauri Dutt Sharma elected president of NASS

Staff Reporter, Guwahati: In a moment of pride for the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM), its Vice Chancellor, Prof. Shri Gauri Dutt Sharma, has been elected President of the National Academy of Social Science (NASS), Allahabad, for the 2025–26 and 2026–27 terms. The announcement was made by the Indian Social Science Academy (ISSA), marking a significant recognition of Prof. Sharma’s lifelong contributions to higher education and social science research. “It is a great honour to serve as President of the National Academy of Social Science,” said Prof. Sharma. “I look forward to working with scholars and institutions across the country to strengthen research and contribute to evidence-based social policy.” USTM Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque praised Prof. Sharma’s achievement, calling it a reflection of his dedication, vision, and leadership in academia. With nearly 45 years of service, Prof. Sharma is a veteran academic administrator, having previously led institutions such as Nagaland Central University and Atal Bihari Vajpayee University. His extensive work in tribal regions of Northeast and Central India is well recognized. A noted scholar and recipient of the Doctor Narasimhan Medal, Prof. Sharma has worked globally, including academic engagements in the UK, US, Japan, and several African and Southeast Asian countries. Founded in 1974, the ISSA is the only national-level academy dedicated to social sciences in India. Under Prof. Sharma’s leadership, the Academy is expected to further its mission of integrating science and society through innovation and education.
