AASU Announces Statewide Stir Demanding Justice for Zubeen Garg

Staff Reporter, Guwahati: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has launched a statewide agitation seeking justice for late singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg, whose untimely death has left Assam grief-stricken. The influential student body has unveiled a three-phase protest campaign to demand a transparent and time-bound investigation into the circumstances surrounding the artist’s demise.

According to the schedule, the first phase — a sit-in protest — will be held on October 14 at major public locations across all district headquarters. The second phase, a candlelight vigil on October 19, will see regional units pay tribute to the late musician in various local venues. The final phase, a “Nyay Samdal” (Justice March), will take place on October 23 across Assam, representing the people’s collective call for justice and accountability.

AASU President Utpal Sharma and General Secretary Samiran Phukan outlined the union’s primary demands — a swift, transparent, and impartial investigation, exemplary punishment for those found guilty, and a comprehensive chargesheet supported by credible evidence.

Expressing disappointment over the ongoing probe, AASU alleged serious lapses and claimed that while several individuals, including Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, and Shekhar Goswami, have been arrested, others connected to Zubeen’s care team and members of the Assam Association in Singapore have “evaded accountability.”

The union also criticised the Assam government’s failure to bring back individuals from Singapore allegedly linked to the case, urging authorities to take strong measures, including passport revocation for anyone obstructing justice.

AASU further stated that Zubeen Garg’s movable, immovable, and intellectual properties should rightfully belong to his wife Garima Saikia Garg and their family. Concluding its statement, AASU vowed that Assam will not rest until justice is delivered to the beloved artist, whose voice, it said, “continues to resonate in every Assamese heart.”
