B.H.B. College organized webinar on Assamese Literature, Resources and Scopes

 




Bajali, 5 July : The Assamese Department of B.H.B. College, Sarupeta on Thursday organized a national-level webinar on the topic ‘Assamese Literature, Resources and Scopes’ On the occasion of the 50th foundation day of the college. The webinar was started with a welcome speech delivered by Dr. Kalpana Baishya, HoD, in the department of Assamese of the college. Dr. Birinchi Kumar Das, Principal of B.H.B. College, delivered the inaugural speech. He emphasized about the history and the growth and development of Assamese literature. In this context he pointed out the contributions of Sankardeva to the Assamese literature. The Jonaki era or the romantic age marked the dawn of romanticism in Assamese literature, he added.  In his lecture he brought various reference of like T.S. Eliot, James George Veria, William Shakespeare, European and American literature. Attending the webinar as resource person, Arindam Borkataky, the eminent writer and Assistant Professor in the department of English, ADP College, Nagaon, explained about the history of the Assamese literature and its scopes. According to Borkataky the rich literary heritage of the Assamese language can be traced back to the 6th century in the Charyapada. He also discussed Assamese literature during pre-vaishnavite and vaishnavite perod. In his lecture Borkataky told about the noteworthy contributions of Christian Missionaries towards the development of Assamese language and literature. The writers of Orunodoi chose the medium of prose, but the poetic grandeur in Assamese literature was achieved by the poets of the Jonaki group and their contemporaries – he added. Borkataky acknowledged the contributions of Oxomiya Bhasha Unnati Xadhini Xobha to the Assamese literature. His lecture on modern Assamese literature was also really informative. The national webinar was hosted by Preeti Rekha Dutta, Assistant Professor and coordinator of the webinar.  B.H.B. College has been regularly organizing webinars which are playing a pivotal role in satisfying the needs of both the students as well as the budding teachers, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The webinar was conducted through Google meet and YouTube LIVE where approximately 380 participants across the state participated in the webinar. The webinar ended with the vote of thanks offered by Preeti Rekha Dutta.
