Staff Reporter, Guwahati: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya today attended the Veterans’ Swabhimaan Rally 2025 held at Narangi Military Station, organised by Headquarters 51 Sub Area to celebrate the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of India’s armed forces veterans.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Acharya described the rally as a proud and emotional occasion, praising the selfless service of soldiers who safeguard the nation. “A soldier never truly retires — he continues to serve the country in new ways,” the Governor said, adding that honouring defenders of the nation is an integral part of India’s cultural identity.
He highlighted several major government initiatives for veterans’ welfare, including the One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme, the Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme, and various programs promoting skill development and self-employment among ex-servicemen.
The Governor commended Assam’s proactive measures for veteran welfare, such as a 2% job reservation for ex-servicemen in Grade I and II posts, the increase of medical college seats for their children from three to nine, and the effective functioning of the Directorate of Sainik Welfare.

Acharya also spoke about Raj Bhavan Assam’s initiative — “Rajyapal Assam Rashtriya Kritagyata Aur Jagrookta Yojana” — which brings stories of bravery into schools and colleges to inspire youth.
During the event, financial aid and assistive devices like wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and medical beds were distributed to Veer Naris and needy veterans. The rally also featured service stalls offering medical assistance, pension support, and skill development guidance.
The event saw participation from veterans, serving personnel, and senior dignitaries, including Lt Gen Sanjay Malik, Maj Gen A.K. Sharma, Lt Gen R.P. Kalita (Retd), and Air Marshal Anjan Kumar Gogoi (Retd).
