Staff Reporter, Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday launched the Chief Minister’s Foreign Language Initiative (CM-FLIGHT) — a landmark program that aims to train 50,000 young people in the Japanese language and open up overseas employment opportunities for them in Japan.
Under the initiative, candidates who successfully clear the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) will be eligible for five-year work visas, with job placements in Japan offering salaries of up to ₹2 lakh per month.
Expressing gratitude to Nishikawa of Japan for supporting the program, Sarma said the training cost had been drastically reduced to just ₹30,000 for students after government subsidies. “During Advantage Assam 2.0, we signed three MoUs with Japan for language training and placements,” he noted.

The training will be conducted by three organizations — ASEAN ONE, Jaceex Ventures LLP, and Meiko Career Partners Co. Ltd. — under Japan’s Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa framework. The total course fee of ₹1.8 lakh will be shared between the Assam government (₹1 lakh), Japan (₹50,000), and the student (₹30,000).
The CM-FLIGHT program, first announced on July 23, includes structured training designed to prepare learners up to the JLPT N2 level. Graduates will have the opportunity to work in Japan on short-term paid assignments, gaining valuable international experience and exposure.
Highlighting Assam’s vision to develop a globally competitive workforce, Sarma said discussions are also underway with South Korea and Germany for similar collaborations. “This initiative will open new horizons for our youth,” Sarma said. “It’s not just about learning a language — it’s about connecting Assam to the global job market and addressing unemployment through skill empowerment.”
