Dhubri Police Seize 14 Camels in Suspected Cross-Border Smuggling Attempt

Dhubri/Tamarhat: In a major anti-smuggling operation, Dhubri Police seized a truck carrying 14 camels in Charaldanga village near Gauripur early Saturday, foiling an alleged attempt to traffic the animals across the Indo-Bangladesh border.

The operation followed an alert from local villagers who noticed the camels being unloaded near a brick kiln and promptly informed the Gauripur Police Station. On arrival, police found the animals and the truck abandoned, as the driver and suspected smugglers fled the scene under cover of darkness.

Preliminary investigations point to an international smuggling network, with intelligence suggesting plans to move the camels from Charaldanga via Alomganj into Bangladesh. The seized vehicle, bearing registration number UP-17BT-5719, lacked valid transit and fitness certificates, further confirming illegal activity.

Police have launched a manhunt to track the culprits. The camels are currently under Gauripur Police custody, with arrangements being made for their care and relocation.

Officials noted a growing trend of unusual animal trafficking in Assam’s border areas, where smugglers are now targeting camels instead of cattle. A detailed investigation is underway, and authorities have assured strict action against those involved.
