Gas leak panic in Sivasagar: ONGC races to contain uncontrolled gush

Staff Reporter, Sivasagar: A massive gas leak from the RDS#147A well near Bhotiapar in Assam’s Rudrasagar oil field has triggered panic and emergency evacuations, with ONGC’s Crisis Management Team working round-the-clock to bring the situation under control. The incident follows a powerful explosion on Wednesday, June 12, at the 147 No. rig operated by ONGC. The blast led to an uncontrolled release of natural gas, accompanied by a deafening roar that sent shockwaves through the surrounding villages. The force and noise of the gas gushing out were reportedly heard up to 4 kilometers away, prompting frightened residents to flee their homes. In a statement released by ONGC, the company confirmed that its Crisis Management Team is on-site and actively engaged in containment efforts. “The required fluids for the subdue operation have been made ready, and the next step in the operation is expected to start at daybreak tomorrow. In view of the presence of gas, entry to the location is being restricted to concerned operational personnel only,” the statement read. The situation remains tense as the leak continues, with emergency response teams deployed to the site. The Sivasagar district administration has evacuated at least 70 families to a relief camp as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of residents. Local villagers, shaken by the sudden blast and the ongoing emissions, are demanding urgent intervention and clear communication from ONGC and district authorities regarding the safety protocols and timeline for containment. As containment operations gear up to enter a critical phase, all eyes remain on Bhotiapar, where a high-stakes effort is underway to cap the well and restore safety to the region.
