Wing Commander Vyomika Singh leads 'Operation Sindoor' briefing

News Desk, New Delhi: Wing Commander Vyomika Singh of the Indian Air Force (IAF) addressed a high-profile press briefing in New Delhi on Wednesday, following India’s precision missile strikes under 'Operation Sindoor' targeting terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation, launched in retaliation to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives, saw Indian forces destroy nine key terror sites, including the Jaish-e-Mohammad base in Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba’s facility in Muridke. Flanking Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri at the briefing were Wing Commander Singh and Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, both of whom presented details of the mission’s success. Singh, a seasoned helicopter pilot with over 2,500 flying hours, has led numerous rescue operations in high-risk zones including Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast. Known for her daring spirit, Singh once recounted how her name—Vyomika, meaning “one who owns the sky”—sparked her ambition in childhood to become a pilot. “Since Class 6, I knew I wanted to fly,” she shared in a 2023 panel celebrating women in defence. Her career has lived up to that early aspiration. In 2020, she led a life-saving rescue mission in Arunachal Pradesh, flying under extreme conditions to evacuate stranded civilians. Speaking to a private channel, Singh reflected on her journey in the IAF: “It’s been an excellent experience—and I love it.” Her presence at the forefront of the press conference symbolised not only the operational success of ‘Operation Sindoor’ but also the rising role of women in India’s defence leadership.
