Tapan Deka gets one-year extension as IB Chief

Staff Reporter, Guwahati: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved a one-year extension in service for Tapan Kumar Deka, IPS, as Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB). His tenure has been extended beyond June 30, 2025, or until further orders, whichever comes earlier. The extension has been granted by relaxing provisions under Fundamental Rule 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958. Deka, a 1988-batch IPS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, was appointed IB chief in July 2022. Renowned for his expertise in counter-terrorism, he has led several critical internal security operations and played a key role in shaping the country's intelligence strategy. In a parallel development, the Assam government has formally appointed Harmeet Singh, IPS, as the new Director General of Police (DGP). A 1992-batch officer, Singh's appointment comes with elevation to the Apex Scale (Level 17 of the Pay Matrix), effective from the date he assumed charge. Singh had been serving as acting DGP prior to his official appointment, in addition to leading important departments such as Civil Defence and Home Guards. His confirmation follows the departure of GP Singh from the top post, marking a significant leadership transition in Assam's police force. Both appointments come at a crucial time as the nation navigates complex internal security dynamics and state-level law enforcement restructuring.
