Gauhati HC grants bail to Ex-AASU leader Sankarjyoti

Staff Reporter, Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court on Monday granted bail to Sankar Jyoti Baruah, the former General Secretary of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), following his recent arrest linked to a heated altercation at the B.N. Singh petrol depot in Duliajan. The incident, which reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation, quickly took on political overtones and ignited public debate across Assam.Baruah’s detention stirred widespread criticism, particularly among indigenous advocacy groups and student organizations. His supporters argued that the arrest was excessive and politically motivated, pointing to what they claim is an emerging pattern of targeting indigenous leaders. Among the most vocal critics was the Bir Lachit Sena Assam, whose leader Shrinkhal Chaliha condemned the arrest as part of a broader attempt to suppress the voices of indigenous Assamese.Adding to the controversy is the ongoing demand for action against Tanu Shahi, allegedly the main provocateur in the case. Shahi is accused of making inflammatory and derogatory remarks about the Assamese community, yet no formal action has been taken against him so far. This has sparked frustration among many who view the case as an example of selective justice. The court's decision to release Baruah on bail has been welcomed by his supporters, who view it as a step toward restoring fairness in the handling of the case. Many civil society groups continue to call for a transparent and unbiased investigation into the full circumstances of the incident. The episode has become a flashpoint in Assam’s broader discourse on indigenous rights, freedom of expression, and legal impartiality. While the legal proceedings are ongoing, the political and social ramifications of the case are expected to linger, with activists and student leaders vowing to keep the issue alive until justice is served for all parties involved. As tensions continue to simmer, the case underscores the growing need for balanced and fair law enforcement in politically sensitive matters affecting Assam’s indigenous population.
