D.H.S.K. College observes International Museum Day

Staff Reporter, Dibrugarh: To mark International Museum Day, D.H.S.K. College (Autonomous) hosted an International Lecture Programme highlighting the importance of museums in preserving heritage and promoting cross-cultural understanding. The event was jointly organized by the Department of Anthropology and the International and Industrial Relations Cell of the college, in collaboration with the Directorate of Historical and Antiquarian Studies (ITFC), Government of Assam. Principal Dr. Sashi Kanta Saikia delivered the welcome address, emphasizing museums as vital educational spaces and reaffirming the college’s dedication to academic collaboration both in India and abroad. Dr. Sangeeta Gogoi, Director (i/c) of the Directorate of Historical and Antiquarian Studies, attended as the Guest of Honour. She spoke about Assam’s heritage initiatives and the critical role museums play in cultural preservation. The programme featured two guest speakers from Thailand, offering international insights. Luxamun Boonrueng, Director and Curator at Khon Kaen National Museum, spoke about ancient artifacts such as stone inscriptions, palm leaf manuscripts, and Buddha images from the Lan Xang civilization. He highlighted their historical significance and the need for international cooperation in their study and preservation. Korrakoch Panich, Curator at the same museum, presented on the rising popularity of “Art Toys” in Thailand and their role in modernizing museum spaces. She stressed the importance of innovation in curatorial practices to make museums more engaging and accessible to younger audiences. The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. Sunanda Sahu, Head of the Anthropology Department. The session was moderated by Suraj Hazarika, faculty member of the department. The programme successfully fostered dialogue on heritage, innovation, and the evolving role of museums in society.
