Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam is Indian Culture : Assam Governor

Hojai, January 28: Governor Laxman Prasad Acharaya said that patience, perseverance, discipline and consistency are more vital for a student to excel in life than comfort and amenities. The Governor and Chancellor of Rabindranath Tagore University said this while speaking at the Second Convocation ceremony of Rabindranath Tagore University held at Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankardev Campus (old campus) of RTU in Hojai on Tuesday. He said Indian culture is of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, so our degrees' sole objective shouldn't be limited to obtaining a Job , through our degree (education) each and every individual's responsibility should be to contribute in the upliftment of the society thereby empowering our Nation India. He said education is a life long continuous process, one can learn anything at any time. Governor said education opens doors for ample opportunities. "Students should be the job creators, who can contribute to the upliftment of the Nation," he added. The Governor said he is delighted and extremely happy to be a part of the Second Convocation ceremony of RTU. He said the patriotic and refreshing environment has satisfied him. He said today is the historic day for Rabindranath Tagore University. His excellency said convocation is the biggest festival for the students as they are conferred with the degrees for which they have toiled hard for years. He said,"the contributions of Parents and Teachers are also vital and need to be remembered and cherished always." The Governor said,"The name of the University of legendary poet Rabindranath Tagore makes it a more special and revered place." " Now,it is the responsibility of the students to keep the honour and respect of Rabindranath Tagore University,"he said. Governor further emphasized on women empowerment. He said a girl lightens two houses, one at which she is born and the other where she gets married. He said today seeing the girls excelling in every field makes him happy, he quoted betiya agae badhygi, toh hamare desh agae badhyegaa. Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Vice Chancellor, Gauhati University graced the occasion as Special Guest. While delivering the Convocation address, Prof. Mahanta highlighted fundamental principles on Tagore's education philosophy. He said Rabindranath Tagore University, Hojai will be the torch bearer of the fecund legacy,spirit and motto of the modern education envisioned by Rabindranath Tagore. He said RTU is a beacon of light, a symbol of cultural harbinger, a resourceful depositor of knowledge. He said today is the day of celebration of ethos and values of University, its duty of every students to carry forward the same. He further highlighted in detail the ideology, values of Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore. At last, he discussed the importance of 'Artificial Intelligence' in the present time. Speaking on the special occasion, Manbendra Dutta Choudhury, Vice Chancellor, Rabindranath Tagore University said it is a great pleasure and honour for all of us. Rabindranath Tagore University is a prime example in front of us as a budding educational institution for higher education which has developed rapidly with consistent success and performance by our teachers and students fraternity. He said the location of the university serves an important purpose of socio-cultural solidarity among us. During the second convocation, Professor Upen Rabha Hakacham, Professor, Assamese Department, Gauhati University, a distinguished literary and noted scholar was honored with the 'Life Time Achievement Award' for his valuable contribution to Assamese language and culture. He was honoured with a citation, memento and cheque of one Lakh rupees. It is noteworthy, in the 2nd Convocation degrees were awarded to 540 graduates, including 459 undergraduate (UG) students and 81 postgraduate (PG) students. Among them, three outstanding scholars were awarded Gold Medals for their academic excellence. The recipients of the Gold Medals were Debraj Roy (Postgraduate Topper, Zoology, 2024 batch), Susmita Debnath (Postgraduate Topper, 2024 batch Department of Bengali) and Rujuma Begum (Postgraduate Topper, 2024 batch Department of Natural Science, Chemistry) At the very outset, the ceremony begin with the singing of National Anthem and State song of Assam (O Mur Apunar Dekh). The convocation ceremony concluded with the singing of the National Anthem. During the ceremony, greetings message to Rabindranath University sent by Gulab Chand Kataria, Present Governor, Punjab and Chandigarh, and former Governor of Assam was also read.
It is worth mentioning here that, On 11 July,1964 Hojai College was established in Hojai which has been a beacon of education for more than half a century. And, on 16 October 2017,Hojai College was upgraded to Rabindranath Tagore University.
