Pro-talks ULFA leader Jiten Dutta Calls for Deepawali Boycott in Assam

Abhijit Chaliha, Guwahati: Indigenous rights activist and Pro-talks ULFA leader Jiten Dutta has urged the people of Assam to observe a silent and symbolic Deepawali this year as a mark of protest over the mysterious death of singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg.

In a video message shared widely on social media on Saturday, Dutta appealed to citizens to refrain from bursting firecrackers or holding lavish celebrations, instead lighting only earthen lamps as a gesture of unity and remembrance.

“Until those responsible for Zubeen Garg’s death are brought to justice, it is our moral duty to celebrate no festival in full spirit,” Dutta said, describing this year’s Deepawali as a “Festival of Justice.” He likened the appeal to the silent Durga Puja observances held earlier in Garg’s memory.

Dutta further warned that if justice continues to be delayed, Assamese people might even forgo Bohag Bihu next year. “This is not just an appeal — it’s a demand for justice for our cultural god,” he said, adding that no crackers should be burst in Tinsukia.

Zubeen Garg passed away in Singapore under unclear circumstances, sparking statewide outrage. The Assam Government’s SIT is investigating the case, with the viscera report expected to reach Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today. As Deepawali approaches on October 20–21, 2025, calls grow stronger for a quiet, dignified celebration in remembrance of the beloved artist.
