ULFA(I) Cadre Jit Asom Surrenders in Nagaland

Staff Reporter, Sibsagar: In a significant development in the ongoing efforts to curb militancy in the Northeast, an active cadre of the banned militant outfit ULFA (Independent), identified as Jit Asom — real name Janardan Gogoi — has surrendered before authorities in Nagaland. The surrender marks another step forward in the gradual weakening of the insurgent group’s influence in the region. Following his surrender, Gogoi was taken into custody by Charaideo district police in Assam for further questioning and completion of legal formalities. According to police sources, the former insurgent hails from Uday Nagar, Sadar Chapakhowa in the Shadiya subdivision of Assam’s Tinsukia district — a region that has historically seen militant activity. Security officials have described the development as part of a growing trend of ULFA(I) cadres choosing to lay down arms, a move attributed to the intensified counter-insurgency operations and sustained efforts by security forces and state agencies to rehabilitate insurgents through dialogue and reintegration initiatives. Authorities are expected to release further information on the surrender, including any weapons or communication materials handed over, following an official press briefing scheduled later this week. The surrender is being seen as a morale booster for ongoing peace efforts in Assam, where calls for lasting resolution and development have been gaining ground.
