Morigaon police bust Cyber fraud ring, five arrested

Khairul Islam, Morigaon: In a significant breakthrough against cybercrime, Morigaon police dismantled a major cyber fraud network during a pre-dawn raid on June 5 in the Bowalguri area under Laharighat Police Station. The operation led to the arrest of five individuals accused of duping victims out of more than ₹10 lakh. The suspects, identified as Annas Ali (27), Abu Ayub Ansary (22), Aslam Ahmed (29), Nur Uddin (22), and Aptarul Islam (28), are all residents of villages falling under the Laharighat Police Station jurisdiction in Morigaon district. Acting on intelligence inputs, police teams conducted a coordinated raid and detained the suspects. Following verification and interrogation, all five were formally arrested and are expected to be produced before the court today. Preliminary investigations suggest that the accused were involved in a range of fraudulent cyber activities. According to police records, the amounts swindled by each suspect range from ₹1.10 lakh to ₹3.50 lakh. Nur Uddin is believed to have defrauded the highest individual amount, while Aslam Ahmed is linked to scams amounting to ₹2.50 lakh. Morigaon Superintendent of Police is expected to release further details regarding the modus operandi and the number of victims once the investigation progresses. Police officials have confirmed that the crackdown is part of a broader effort to curb rising cybercrime cases in the district. More arrests are likely as authorities continue tracing the digital and financial trails connected to the accused. The incident has raised fresh concerns about the increasing sophistication of cybercriminals operating from rural areas, prompting renewed calls for enhanced digital awareness and cybersecurity enforcement.
