Assam govt recovers Rs 7.5 cr from Haryana-based company

Staff reporter, Guwahati: In a major crackdown on tax evasion, the Assam government has recovered ₹7.5 crore from a Haryana-based company, Kaluwala Construction Private Limited, for alleged Goods and Services Tax (GST) evasion. The company is engaged in constructing a four-lane road between Dhemaji in Assam and Oyan in Arunachal Pradesh. An official from the state tax department informed that a 12-member investigation team from Guwahati carried out a six-day operation to probe the firm’s tax records. The inquiry revealed multiple discrepancies in the company's GST profile, raising serious concerns over financial irregularities. "Preliminary investigations indicate a massive tax evasion of approximately ₹64 crore. The company failed to provide proper justification for several irregularities during the verification process," the official stated. In response, the state authorities initiated swift enforcement action, which led to the immediate recovery of ₹7.5 crore from the company. Officials have confirmed that further investigations are underway to assess the full scope of the evasion and recover additional dues, if any. The case underscores the Assam government’s commitment to cracking down on tax fraud and ensuring transparency and accountability, particularly in large-scale infrastructure projects involving external contractors.
