ZSI Hosts Yoga and Sustainability Event at Himalayan University

Itanagar: In a unique blend of wellness and environmental consciousness, the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) organised a run-up event at Himalayan University, Itanagar, on Friday as a precursor to the International Day of Yoga. Held under the guidance of the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEFCC), the initiative aimed to promote the dual values of health and ecological responsibility. The event was inaugurated by the university's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Prakash Divakaran, who opened the programme with a symbolic tree sapling plantation—a gesture underscoring the link between personal well-being and environmental care. The brief ceremony, lasting around 15 to 20 minutes, set the tone for a day dedicated to mindfulness, sustainability, and holistic health. Participants were encouraged to view yoga not only as a tool for physical and mental fitness but also as a means of fostering a deeper connection with nature. The event emphasized integrating yoga practices with sustainable living as part of broader national efforts toward environmental stewardship. Prominent attendees included Ilona J Kharkongor, Scientist-E and Officer-in-Charge of the ZSI Arunachal Pradesh Regional Centre, and Dr. Temjenmongla, Scientist-D. University officials such as Registrar Mr. Vijay Tripathi and department heads Dr. Feroz Ahmed, Mr. Reyoum Ete, and Dr. Sonbeer Chack also participated, showcasing institutional support for the initiative. The programme highlighted the shared commitment of both ZSI and Himalayan University to promoting a healthier, more sustainable future through education and active community involvement. Serving as a prelude to the main Yoga Day celebrations on June 21, the event called upon participants to embrace lifestyle changes that nurture both the body and the planet.
