Staff Reporter, Guwahati:In a landmark event that brought immense pride to the North Eastern Region, Prof. Ramesh Chandra Deka, Vice Chancellor of Cotton University, was formally conferred the rank of Honorary Colonel and appointed as Colonel Commandant in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) during a Rank Pipping Ceremony held on the university campus on June 20. This prestigious recognition by the Government of India honours Prof. Deka’s remarkable contribution to youth development and his unwavering support for NCC activities. Notably, he is the only Vice Chancellor in the North Eastern Region to receive this distinction in 2025. The ceremony was graced by senior NCC dignitaries including Brig Ajit Kumar Borah, VSM, Group Commander, NCC Group HQ Guwahati; Col Ajay Kumar Sharma, CO, 60 Assam Girls Battalion NCC; and Wg Cdr Huvey Upadhyaya, SC, CO, 50 Assam Air Squadron NCC. The officers jointly piped the Honorary Colonel rank on Prof. Deka and presented him with a certificate and DO letter from the Director General NCC. Cadets from 60 Assam Girls Battalion and 50 Assam Air Squadron NCC participated in the ceremonial event, which was marked by discipline and enthusiasm. Anchored by cadet MCs, the programme highlighted the strong bond between the university and the NCC. Brig Borah hailed the appointment as a “recognition of Prof. Deka’s commitment to nation-building through youth empowerment.” Prof. Deka expressed deep gratitude, stating, “I am honoured to join the NCC family and will continue to work towards nurturing our youth as responsible citizens.” The event marked a historic milestone for Cotton University and the NCC fraternity in the region, celebrating a shared commitment to academic excellence and national service.
