ONGC Successfully Caps Gas Well Blowout in Sivasagar

Staff Reporter, Sivasagar: The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has successfully sealed a major gas well blowout in Assam’s Sivasagar district, bringing an end to a two-week-long emergency that triggered widespread concern and forced evacuations in nearby areas.The uncontrolled gas release at well RDS 147A, which began on June 12, was brought under control at 11:15 AM today following an intense and coordinated operation led by ONGC’s Crisis Management Team, in collaboration with international well control experts. The high-risk capping operation concluded without any casualties, injuries, or fire incidents. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri hailed the successful containment effort, calling it an example of crisis response completed in the “shortest possible time” in line with global standards. He praised the meticulous planning and seamless coordination among teams for ensuring a safe outcome. The incident had affected surrounding communities, prompting the implementation of precautionary measures, including evacuation of residents exposed to potential gas emissions. Health and safety concerns remained high throughout the duration of the blowout. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma commended the resilience of the people of Sivasagar, particularly those in the immediate vicinity of the site, for their cooperation during the crisis. He also lauded the efforts of emergency responders, local authorities, and technical teams for their unwavering commitment. The operation involved a complex engineering response, with ONGC deploying advanced equipment and drawing on global expertise to resolve the situation. State officials provided round-the-clock logistical and ground support throughout the containment effort.
