Flood Situation Worsens in Nagaon District, Over 76 Villages Affected

Hareswar Bora, Nagaon: The flood situation in Assam’s Nagaon district has taken a severe turn since Sunday, with fresh areas inundated under the Kaliabor, Kampur, and Raha revenue circles. Rising water levels of the Kapili river have submerged multiple villages, especially in the greater Kampur region, triggering widespread panic among residents. Floodwaters have breached several key roads, including the Kampur-Jamunamukh road at Sariahtoli, disrupting connectivity and isolating affected areas. Villages such as Kampur Bokulguri, Padumoni, Kumbhirdubi, Dhemajigaon, Bahakabari, Kunwariati, and Adarshgaon are currently submerged, forcing many residents to seek refuge on embankments where makeshift camps have been set up. Local reports confirm a growing humanitarian concern, with shortages of food and drinking water in several flood-hit zones. More than 76 revenue villages in the Kampur area alone are grappling with flood-induced disruptions, particularly on the Kampur-Jamunamukh and Kampur–Changsoki–Tumprong PWD roads. District Commissioner Narendra Kr Shah and Raha MLA Sashikanta Das visited several inundated areas and relief camps to assess the damage. They assured flood-hit residents of all necessary support from the district administration to tackle the worsening crisis. In response to the emergency, the district administration has announced the closure of 115 schools — including LP, ME, High Schools, and Higher Secondary Schools — in affected areas of Kampur and Raha revenue circles, effective immediately. Additionally, a strict prohibition order under Section 163 of the BNSS has been enforced. The public has been barred from using the Hatimura dyke stretch from Kukurakota hill to Hatimura hill, as the continuous rain has rendered the path muddy and dangerously slippery. Authorities warned that public movement on the dyke could pose a serious threat to safety and hinder critical ongoing repair work. With the situation rapidly deteriorating, the administration is working to ensure relief measures are in place while urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and cooperate with rescue and relief efforts.
