A Correspondent, Duliajan: Tanu Shahi has been taken into custody by Duliajan Police after alleged derogatory comments against the Assamese community sparked public outrage. The arrest follows an FIR filed by the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), which gave authorities a 48-hour deadline to act. The Additional Superintendent of Police from Dibrugarh is leading the interrogation at Duliajan Police Station. Local pressure intensified after the Bir Lachit Sena, led by Shrinkhal Chaliha, warned of mass protests if immediate action wasn’t taken. Shahi is already a controversial figure, having previously filed a complaint that led to the arrest of former AASU General Secretary Sankarjyoti Baruah—an action that triggered state-wide protests. The current issue stems from an incident at the BN Singh Petrol Pump in Duliajan, where Shahi allegedly made offensive remarks. The comments drew swift backlash, reigniting community tensions. Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and local groups are closely monitoring the situation, demanding firm action to uphold community respect.
