Assam extends deadline for one-time deregistration scheme

Abhijit Chaliha, Guwahati: In a significant move aimed at easing the burden on vehicle owners, the Assam government has extended the deadline for the one-time settlement scheme under the Assam Motor Vehicle Scrapping Policy 2022 by another year. Owners of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) or vehicles deemed unfit for road use now have until March 31, 2026, to deregister their vehicles by paying only 25 per cent of all pending taxes and penalties. This extension brings substantial relief to thousands of vehicle owners across the state. The scheme offers a 75 per cent waiver on total dues, including accumulated penalties, for those who voluntarily come forward to deregister their unfit vehicles. "Under the Motor Vehicles Act, it is mandatory for owners of vehicles that have exceeded their lifespan or become unfit for use to deregister them at the District Transport Office (DTO)," said Gautam Das, a senior official with the Transport Department. He added that failure to do so results in the vehicle remaining marked as "active" in the government’s Vahan Portal, thereby accruing additional taxes and late fees. Once deregistration is completed, vehicle owners must present the certificate at a Registered Vehicle Scrappage Facility (RVSF) to formally scrap the vehicle. Upon scrappage, owners will receive a certificate of deposit, which makes them eligible for additional financial benefits — including a 25 per cent tax rebate for 15 years on new personal vehicles or a 15 per cent rebate for 8 years on commercial vehicles. The move is part of a broader effort by the Assam government to reduce vehicular pollution, promote the use of newer, safer vehicles, and streamline the process of removing outdated ones from the roads. Officials are urging all eligible vehicle owners to take advantage of the scheme before the new deadline.
