Kaushik Rai hails Chotomamda's first C-section as healthcare milestone

A Correspondent, Silchar: In a landmark development for rural healthcare in southern Assam, Chotomamda Model Hospital in Cachar district successfully conducted its first-ever Caesarean Section (C-section) on May 20, 2025. This achievement makes it the second Community Health Centre (CHC)-level First Referral Unit (FRU) in the district, after Katigorah Model Hospital in 2017, to offer such advanced maternal care. The milestone was officially recognized during a District Health Society review meeting held on Tuesday at the Cachar Deputy Commissioner's Office. Chaired by DC Mridul Yadav, the meeting was attended by Borkhola MLA Misbahul Islam Laskar, senior health officials, and Minister Kaushik Rai, who graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Minister Kaushik Rai, who also serves as the Minister for Food, Public Distribution, Consumer Affairs, Mines and Minerals, and Barak Valley Development, hailed the accomplishment as a turning point in equitable healthcare delivery. “This is more than a medical achievement—it reflects our commitment to ensuring that even the most remote communities have access to dignified and safe maternal care,” he said. The Minister also urged the Health Department to fast-track the operationalization of upcoming health centres under the NHM and PWD, and emphasized stronger implementation of the Tea Garden Wage Compensation Scheme to ensure no pregnant woman is left behind in tea garden areas. Healthcare personnel involved in the C-section and overall service delivery were felicitated during the meeting, drawing praise from Minister Rai, MLA Laskar, and DC Yadav for their dedication and excellence. The transformation of Chotomamda Hospital into an FRU-level facility was driven by sustained efforts from the District Health Society and Minister Rai, who has played a key role in mobilizing infrastructure support, including residential quarters and a Block Public Health Unit. This achievement marks a major step forward for maternal health in the Barak Valley, underscoring the potential of focused governance and coordinated health care efforts in uplifting underserved regions.
