Justice Ashutosh Kumar recommended as Chief Justice of Gauhati HC

Staff Reporter, Guwahati: In a key judicial development, the Supreme Court Collegium on Monday recommended the elevation of Justice Ashutosh Kumar, the current Acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, as the next Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. The recommendation comes in the wake of the Collegium’s proposal to elevate the incumbent Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, Justice Vijay Bishnoi, to the Supreme Court, thereby creating a vacancy at the helm of the Gauhati High Court. Justice Ashutosh Kumar brings a distinguished academic and legal background to the role. He completed his schooling at St. Michael’s High School in Patna before graduating from the prestigious St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University. He pursued his law degree from the Campus Law Centre, Delhi University, and enrolled as an advocate with the Patna High Court on July 9, 1991. His judicial career began with his appointment as an additional judge of the Patna High Court on May 15, 2014. He was subsequently transferred to the Delhi High Court, where he took oath on January 7, 2015. Justice Kumar returned to the Patna High Court on November 21, 2017, and was confirmed as a permanent judge on April 21, 2016. Since January 2025, he has been serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. Legal experts have welcomed the recommendation, citing Justice Kumar's extensive experience and legal acumen. His elevation is expected to bring continued stability and leadership to the Gauhati High Court, one of the oldest and most significant High Courts in the Northeast. The formal appointment will follow the President's approval based on the recommendation.
