Heavy rainfall to continue across Assam: IMD

Staff Reporer, Guwahati: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a continued weather alert for Assam, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts over the next 48 to 72 hours. According to data recorded on 20th May, various parts of Guwahati and surrounding areas have already experienced significant rainfall, with 112.5 mm registered at the Guwahati AWS station, 115 mm at AAU-HRS, 110 mm at the Mirza Circle Office, and 100 mm at IASST-Kamrup. The IMD’s forecast indicates that both the western and southern regions of the state are likely to witness intensified rainfall activity, with isolated pockets potentially receiving up to 200 mm of precipitation. This ongoing spell of rain is attributed to persistent moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal interacting with local topography, leading to widespread showers. In Guwahati city, the incessant rain has already begun to impact normal life. Waterlogging has been reported from several low-lying localities, and traffic congestion is worsening due to submerged roads and poor visibility. Authorities are concerned about the risk of tree falls, localized landslides—especially in hillside neighborhoods—and further urban flooding. The Guwahati Municipal Corporation and District Disaster Management Authority have ramped up preparedness efforts, deploying quick-response teams and pumping equipment to critical areas. Residents have been urged to stay indoors during intense rainfall hours and avoid taking shelter under trees or unstable structures. Public advisories recommend minimizing travel, particularly during peak rainfall periods. Commuters are advised to check traffic and weather updates before heading out, while those in flood-prone and erosion-prone zones should stay alert to evacuation orders or warnings. The IMD and state administration continue to monitor the evolving situation closely. Citizens are requested to remain informed through official channels and follow all safety directives issued by authorities.
