Former AASU Leader Sankor Jyoti Baruah Arrested Over Duliajan Clash

Staff Reporter, Dibrugarh: Former General Secretary of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), Sankor Jyoti Baruah, was arrested by Dibrugarh police on Monday in connection with a violent altercation that took place at a petrol pump in Duliajan. The arrest followed his initial detention on Sunday night by Duliajan police. He was later brought to Dibrugarh Sadar Police Station under tight security for questioning. Baruah has been formally charged under two cases—Case Nos. 89/2025 and 90/2025. The latter includes multiple serious sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including U/S 196(1)(a), 197(1)(d), and 353(2), among others, signaling the severity of the accusations. The incident involved a violent clash among three groups, comprising around 20 individuals, during which four petrol pump employees sustained injuries. The police action was initiated following an FIR filed by a woman present at the scene. Baruah underwent a medical examination prior to being taken into custody. Media access was restricted upon his arrival at the police station. During interrogation, Baruah maintained his innocence, stating he had visited the petrol pump only to mediate and de-escalate the situation. A video circulating on social media appears to support his claim, showing him attempting to calm the conflicting groups. Police say the case is still under active investigation and further arrests are likely. Authorities are working to identify all individuals involved in what they have termed a “serious incident.”
