Staff Reporter, Dibrugarh: In a landmark move on International Museum Day, Dibrugarh University and the Directorate of Museums, Assam signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on cultural preservation, heritage research, and student engagement. The MoU was signed by Arindom Barua, Director of Museums, Assam, and Prasanta Kumar Kakati, Registrar (in-charge) of Dibrugarh University, in the presence of Vice Chancellor Prof. Jiten Hazarika. The partnership aims to position the university as a key centre for cultural research in Northeast India. “This collaboration allows our students and faculty to contribute directly to heritage conservation, combining academic insight with hands-on experience,” said Prof. Hazarika. Marking the occasion, the university hosted a two-day international conference titled “Reimagining Heritage Conservation” from May 18–19. The event drew experts from across India and abroad, including delegates from Thailand’s Khon Kaen National Museum, Laxaman Boomreng and Korrakech Panich. Notable participants included Sangeeta Gogoi, Director of Historical and Antiquarian Studies, Assam; scholars from Dibrugarh University; and District Museum Officers from Dibrugarh and Barpeta. A key attraction was the “Museum on the Move” exhibition, featuring the Moidams of Charaideo, Assam’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site nominee. The display highlighted Tai-Ahom heritage and included a Conservation and Publications Corner. Additionally, a clay modeling workshop led by Assam State Museum artist Hemanta Saikia allowed students to explore traditional art forms. The MoU paves the way for joint digitisation projects, research collaborations, and internships, enhancing Dibrugarh University’s role in cultural conservation and public history.
