Staff Reporter, Guwahati: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has taken a firm stand following the arrest of its former leader Sankarjyoti Baruah, who has been accused of sexually assaulting a female member of the organization. In a strong and unequivocal statement issued on Friday, the AASU President made it clear that the union would not support Baruah in any capacity. “The union does not stand by a former leader accused of such a grave crime,” the President stated, underlining that Baruah is no longer affiliated with AASU. According to the statement, Baruah allegedly lured the victim—an active AASU member—into a relationship under the false pretense of marriage before sexually abusing her. Reiterating the union’s stance, the President said, “Although he has since severed ties with the organization, the survivor remains a committed member of AASU. We stand firmly by her in her fight for justice. In such circumstances, it is better for Sankarjyoti Baruah not to expect any backing from AASU.” He stressed that the organization has no obligation to protect individuals accused of sexual violence, regardless of their past associations. “Everyone has seen the handcuffs; we have seen the dignity of a young woman torn apart,” he added, highlighting the emotional trauma the survivor has endured. Addressing speculation regarding controversial remarks allegedly made by the survivor, the AASU President said, “If she has made any comment against the nation, she will be answerable—but that does not diminish her right to justice.” The statement marks a decisive move by AASU to uphold accountability and support survivors of sexual violence, regardless of internal affiliations.
