Assam’s Elvis to be Asia’s first swimmer in Antarctica’s icy waters

Staff Reporter, Guwahati: Renowned swimmer Elvis Ali Hazarika from Assam is preparing to make history by becoming the first Asian to swim in the frigid waters of Antarctica—a feat achieved by only 54 swimmers worldwide. Speaking at a press meet at the Guwahati Press Club, Elvis shared the intensity of his preparation for what he calls his most daring challenge yet. “It will test both my body and mind,” he said. If successful, Elvis will become the 37th man and the first Asian to accomplish this Antarctic swim. To meet the challenge, Elvis plans to undergo a two-month cold-water training in the UK, costing around ₹7 to ₹7.5 lakh, followed by a six-week acclimatization in Antarctica. He will be accompanied by a medical team, as conditions like frostbite and snow blindness pose serious risks. All travel in Antarctica will be by ship, given the absence of roads. Elvis estimates he will need ₹40 to ₹50 lakh in total and is currently seeking sponsors. Despite the financial burden, he remains spiritually motivated, stating, “If I do this with the blessings of Maa Kamakhya, it will be my greatest achievement.” He revealed that he had been in talks with organizers for two years and finally received an official invitation on May 7. His training involves ice baths and gripping ice to condition his body for the extreme cold. Calling it possibly his “last journey,” Elvis says this swim is not just about sport but about courage, spirit, and endurance.
