Staff Reporter, Guwahati: In a landmark moment for linguistic scholarship in Assam, the state’s first-ever quadrilingual Sanskrit dictionary — Sanskrit–Assamese–English–Hindi Dictionary — was officially launched at a book release event on Sunday held at the Guwahati Press Club in Ambari. Compiled by noted linguist and educator Binod Talukdar, the dictionary presents Sanskrit words with simultaneous translations in Assamese, English, and Hindi — a rare and pioneering integration in Indian lexicography. The book was formally inaugurated by Padma Shri Dr. Surya Kanta Hazarika, former President of the Axom Sahitya Sabha. Commending the work, Dr. Hazarika said, “This dictionary is a significant contribution to the preservation and promotion of Sanskrit. By linking four languages, it builds linguistic bridges and fosters a deeper cultural understanding.” Also present at the event were prominent figures including Prafulla Barman, President of the Kamrup Metropolitan Axom Sahitya Sabha; Gopal Jalan, writer and social worker; Dr. Mani Sharma Shastri, Principal of Saraighat College; and Bhupesh Khataniar, senior journalist and social activist. The speakers collectively emphasized the dictionary’s academic, cultural, and pedagogical value, particularly for students, researchers, and multilingual learners. The dictionary, the result of four years of painstaking effort, is a testament to Binod Talukdar’s lifelong commitment to language and education. A retired Assistant Headmaster with 38 years of service, Talukdar has also authored Sanskrit Sahayika, a guidebook for Class IX students, and has two more works in the pipeline. The event drew a diverse audience of linguists, educators, literature enthusiasts, and social thinkers — all celebrating a milestone that reinforces Assam’s vibrant intellectual and cultural tradition.
