Drinking water crisis hits Nimaigarh people

Dilip Hazarika, Nazira, September 23 : The people of greater Nimaigarh area under Bantung Gaon Panchayat have been struggling to get pure drinking water for years. Most of them have to walk long distances to fetch undrinkable water from small rivers in the area. The problem gets worse during the winter when small rivers dry up. This is despite the fact that pipes were laid by the Public Health Engineering Department for the Nimaigarh Water Supply Scheme a year ago. But the water supply scheme has not become operational till date due to the lethargy of the PHE Department, Nazira. In a release, Dilwar Hussain and Rituraj Borgohain, president and general secretary respectively of the Nazira Assembly Constituency Committee of Raijar Dal, stated that people of Nimaigarh area have verbally complained to the PHE Department several times about their problem of drinking water, but to no avail. Hussain and Borgohain demanded that the Nimaigarh Water Supply Scheme be made operational without further delay failing which, they say, Raijar Dal would launch a strong democratic movement against the PHE Department.
