Nagaon, August 14: DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta ceremonially laid the foundation stone of a cricket academy at Barhampur near the Headquarters of the 9th Assam Police Battalion. The land for the proposed cricket academy will cover over 25 bighas belonging to 9th Assam Police Battalion. Portfolios of Assam Cricket Association and Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta inked in a MoU for the proposed cricket academy at Barhampur near the Headquarters of 9th Assam Battalion following which DGP Mahanta ceremonially laid foundation stone of the academy today. While addressing the occasion, DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said the academy will boost the spirits of the police personnel in the field of cricket. Barhampur is a historic place with a cluster of cultural as well as political heritage and it is pride of Assam police that the state police is going to set up a cricket academy at this heritage site like Barhampur, DGP Mahanta accorded. In the foundation stone laying ceremony, local MLA Jitu Goswami, the president and secretary of Assam Cricket Association - respectively Ramen Dutta and Debajit Lan Saikia, IGP Nitul Gogoi, Superintendent of Police, Nagaon Leena Doley, 9th AP Bn battalion, commandant Bibekananda Das and other officials of the district police administration as well as the battalion, portfolios of Nagaon Sports Association were present. Meanwhile in the afternoon, DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta visited the residence of Ratnamala Gohain, the youngest daughter of swahid Bhugeswari Phokonani, the martyr of the Quit India movement in 1942 at Nagaon Amolapatty. During his visit, DGP Mahanta felicitated her and also handed over the Indian tricolour to her. Significantly, DGP Mahanta unfurled the tricolour at her residence too.
