Udalguri, July 7: The Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India provided a grant-in-aid for setting up a Food Testing Laboratory at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), Northeastern Regional Center, Guwahati, Assam vide sanction order F No. A. Engg. 12 (23)/2005-AE dated 20-09-2016 with promoter (TERI) contribution. The laboratory is now ready with all the infrastructures and facilities for testing of packaged food products, beverages and drinking water. The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), Northeastern Regional Centres has set up the Food Testing Laboratory in Assam under the scheme Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana–Food safety and quality assurance infrastructure has been established under the sponsorship of Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India with promoter (TERI) contribution. Dr Dipankar Saharia, Director, Regional Centres of TERI said that the Food Testing Laboratory has been set up with the objectives to analyse the samples from licensed food business operators and other stakeholders and to ensure compliance of domestic/international safety standards on food produced and consumed in the northeastern region. Dr. Saharia further said that the Establishment of food testing laboratory accredited to NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) is a Constituent Board of Quality Council of India and subsequent FSSAI affiliation in Guwahati, Assam would safeguard the food safety concerns of consumers besides improving quality and business of food processing entrepreneurs of eight north-eastern states. From 1st June 2022 TERI North-eastern Regional Centre, Chachal, Mahapurush Madhabdev Path, Guwahati-781036, Assam has been accredited as NABL testing lab for testing of Packaged Drinking Water (As per IS: 14543) for Chemical parameters such as Taste, TDS, Turbidity, colour, pH, Odour. Process is on to add more scopes in the areas of Tea, Spices, and milk and Metal analysis of water and other areas. Team member in this lab consists of Dr. Naba Kumar Goswami as Quality manager, Arghyadeep Gupta as Technical Manager, Mahuwa Ghosh, Aanchal Jaiswal, Pradipta Pran Nath as an analyst has been consistently working to make the lab fully functional with NABL Accreditation process. The laboratory has been set up with the intention of providing food and beverage testing services to the food business operators and food manufacturers of Assam and the northeastern region, which is very important at this point of time. The Food Testing Laboratory will be of immense utility for the state of Assam and other related institutions with the emerging concerns for food safety and to keep up with Global standards of Food regulations for organic food products especially with regard to the NE region.
