Delhi: World Health Organization Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan says
coronavirus infection is on the rise in most parts of the world. This
dispersion is visible due to delta variant. There is clear evidence that the
epidemic is not over yet.
In
an interview on Bloomberg TV, Soumya Swaminathan said that some countries have
reduced serious cases of infection and hospitalization with the help of
vaccination. Yet large parts of the world continue to have oxygen shortages,
hospital bed shortages and high death rates.
Swaminathan said about 5
lakh new cases have been reported in the last 24 hours. About 9,300 deaths have
taken place during this period. Cases are on the rise in 5 out of 6 regions of
WHO. The death rate in Africa has increased from 30% to 40% in 2 weeks. This is
mainly due to relaxation of measures such as rapidly spreading delta variants,
slow pace of vaccination, masks and physical distancing.
WHO has again alerted
governments this week to relax the rules. All restrictions are scheduled to be
lifted in England on July 19. It will then be a personal decision whether to
wear a mask or not. Thus and most parts of Europe have been relaxed strictly
after corona cases were reduced.
Mike Ryan, head of WHO's
health emergency program, said on Wednesday that it is very dangerous to think
that everyone in the world is safe and everything is getting normal anywhere.
Tokyo has found 950 new
corona cases on Friday. This is the largest number in the last 2 months. The
continued rise in transition ahead of the Olympic Games to be held here from
July 23 remains a matter of concern for the government. Prime Minister
Yoshihide Suga on Thursday declared an emergency in Tokyo so that the situation
does not go out of control.
