CID Provides Key Updates on Zubeen Garg Death Investigation

Staff Reporter, Guwahati: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has shared important updates regarding the ongoing probe into the death of legendary singer Zubeen Garg. CID Additional Director General of Police (SDGP) Munna Prasad Gupta addressed developments during a press briefing on Saturday.

Gupta clarified that Indian authorities cannot independently investigate foreign jurisdictions. Any overseas inquiry must proceed under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) framework. “All necessary information has been sent to the Attorney General’s Office in Singapore,” Gupta said, adding that coordination continues via the Indian High Commission. He noted that Singapore has barred on-site investigations by Indian officials, though data exchange is ongoing through diplomatic channels.

On the forensic front, the viscera report has been received and forwarded to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for expert review. A specialized medical committee has been set up to cross-verify the viscera findings with the postmortem report. Gupta said the consolidated report is expected to be submitted to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma within two days, with portions shared with selected journalists and political representatives to ensure transparency.

The CID has also issued notices to Assamese expatriates connected to the case. One individual has already appeared before the Special Investigation Team (SIT), while names of 11 expatriates have been recorded. Legal action will be pursued against non-cooperative individuals.

Additionally, two of Zubeen Garg’s personal staff members have been arrested and remain under interrogation, with custody maintained according to legal procedures. Gupta reaffirmed that the CID is conducting a thorough, transparent, and fair investigation, exploring all domestic and international leads to ensure justice in the high-profile case.
