Award winning film ‘Kiyo’ released

Aditya Ankur, Tezpur: The cinematic adaptation of “Kiyo”, the classic play by legendary Assamese dramatist Natasurjya Phani Sarma was released on Friday across multiple cinema halls in the state, including the SVF Cinema Hall in Tezpur. The much-anticipated release comes just a day after the 55th death anniversary of Phani Sarma, one of the stalwarts of modern Assamese theatre. Directed and produced by Aparup Agarwala under the banner of Shree Haribilas Movies, the film has already created a buzz by winning the Best First Time Director Award at the prestigious Berlin Kiez Film Festival, a rare international recognition for a debut Assamese filmmaker. The film is a tribute from Aparup Agarwala, son of the late Bibekananda Agarwala and nephew of Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwala.Continuing the family's artistic legacy, Aparup completed his formal training in film studies in Berlin, before undertaking this ambitious project to bring Phani Sarma’s timeless theatrical work to the screen. Phani Sarma, a close associate of Jyotiprasad Agarwala, is revered for his contributions to Assamese drama and culture. The film’s global recognition is being seen as a proud moment for the people of Tezpur and Assam, rekindling memories of the historic legacy left by Jyotiprasad’s ‘Joymoti’, the first Assamese and fourth Indian film. ‘This film is not only a cinematic experience but also a gesture of respect toward a legend who shaped the foundation of modern Assamese theatre. Watching it is the best homage we can offer,’ said Aparup Agarwala. Aparup, the director of the film further, called on audiences to watch the film and pay heartfelt tribute to Natasurjya Phani Sarma.
