Staff Reporter, Guwahati: Major Dwipannita Kalita, the first female paratrooper from Assam, has brought immense pride to the state and the Northeast by being featured on the cover of Femina India’s Independence Day Special Edition. She appears alongside nine other distinguished women officers of the Indian Army in the magazine’s July-August 2025 edition, in a feature titled In the Line of Duty. A native of Dhekiajuli, Major Kalita currently serves in the Parachute Medical Regiment of the Indian Army. Her appearance on the cover, beside prominent officers like Colonel Sofia Qureshi and Colonel Ponung Doming, marks a celebration of women’s growing presence in the armed forces. The feature highlights the courage and leadership of ten women officers, who have taken up critical roles across military operations — from high-altitude missions to frontline command. Major Kalita’s profile carries a powerful message: “You are not here to fit into a mould – you’re here to break out of it,” symbolizing the shift in traditional gender roles within the Indian military. Assam’s Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to commend her achievement. “Incredibly proud to see Major Dwipannita Kalita, a daughter of Dhekiajuli and the first female paratrooper from Assam, featured on the cover of Femina India, alongside Colonel Sofia Qureshi and 8 other valiant Veeranganas of the Indian Army,” he posted. Also featured in the story is Colonel Sofia Qureshi, who led India’s delegation to the UN Peacekeeping Summit, and Colonel Ponung Doming, the first woman officer from Arunachal Pradesh to become a Colonel in the Border Roads Organisation. Major Kalita’s recognition not only honors her personal journey but also inspires countless young girls from Assam and the region to pursue careers in the armed forces. Her achievement is a testament to the increasing contribution of women in reshaping India’s military leadership across combat, medical, and aviation domains.
