State Cabinet Takes Key Decisions in Assam: From CBI Probe to Water Supply and Land Rights

Staff Reporter, Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, took several significant decisions during its meeting on July 31. In a major move, the Cabinet approved the transfer of the investigation into the suspected suicide case of Smti Joshita Das, Assistant Engineer, PWD, Bongaigaon, to the CBI. Despite arrests and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe, public demand and possible inter-state links led to this decision. The Cabinet also expanded the ambit of the Chief Minister’s Jibon Anuprerana Scheme to include all full-time research scholars (including Divyang) enrolled since April 1, 2021, in government/public institutions in Assam. The number of beneficiaries will rise to 9,953 with a financial outlay of ₹26.21 crore. Among key infrastructure decisions, the Cabinet approved a ₹49.588 crore water supply scheme for Badarpur Town, ensuring 24x7 tap water by 2057 for over 34,000 residents. Land settlement rights were granted to 1,742 indigenous families near Dhemaji town by reducing its municipal boundary, while over 20,000 individuals from Ahom, Matak, Moran, Chutia, Gorkha, Tea Tribe, and Adivasi communities in Tirap Tribal Belt were added to the protected class list for land rights. Other approvals included performance guarantee interchange in JJM contracts, ex-gratia for deceased Jal Sahayaks, and career advancement clarity for college teachers under DHE.
