Staff Reporter, Guwahati: In a significant development for Assam’s infrastructure, the much-awaited Second Rail-cum-Road Bridge over the Brahmaputra River at Saraighat is set to begin construction soon. Sanctioned as part of the doubling of the Agthori–Kamakhya railway line under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), the project received approval in the financial year 2023–24 with an estimated cost of Rs. 1,473.77 crore. It is expected to be completed by December 2029. Key milestones have already been achieved, including the approval of the Design Drawing & Report in March 2025 and the completion of geotechnical investigations. An EPC tender for the construction—covering the bridge, approach roads, rail viaducts, earthwork, and ancillary works—has been floated and is likely to be finalized soon. The project covers a 7.062 km stretch from Agthori to Kamakhya, with a 1.3 km-long steel composite girder bridge over the river. The design features a double-line railway track on the lower deck and a three-lane roadway with footpaths on the upper deck, offering both rail and road connectivity. The bridge will connect Agthori station (north end) via a 2.694 km approach and Kamakhya station (south end) through a 3.07 km approach. Upon completion, the bridge will not only enhance railway line capacity but also boost regional connectivity and economic growth. The project is expected to generate significant employment for both skilled and unskilled workers in the region.
