Assam CM Hits Back at Mamata Banerjee Over Linguistic Politics Remarks

Abhijit Chaliha, Guwahati, July 19: After West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the Assam BJP of pursuing divisive linguistic politics, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma issued a sharp rebuttal on social media, asserting that his government is not fighting its own people but is “fearlessly resisting unchecked Muslim infiltration from across the border. Responding through a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sarma slammed Banerjee’s remarks, saying, “Didi, let me remind you—we are not fighting our own people in Assam. We are resisting infiltration that has led to an alarming demographic shift, where Hindus in several districts are on the verge of becoming a minority in their own land.” Sarma accused Banerjee of compromising Bengal’s future and national integrity for political gains. “You have encouraged illegal encroachment, appeased a particular community for vote banks, and remained silent on border infiltration—all just to stay in power,” he alleged. Highlighting that even the Supreme Court has termed such infiltration as “external aggression,” Sarma condemned the politicisation of efforts to defend Assam’s cultural identity. He praised Assam’s tradition of coexistence among Assamese, Bangla, Bodo, and Hindi-speaking communities, but emphasized that “no civilisation can survive without protecting its borders and cultural foundation.” He concluded his remarks by vowing that Assam will continue to protect its heritage, identity, and people with “courage and constitutional clarity.” The exchange has further intensified the political discourse between the two eastern states.
