Students collapse in Dibrugarh schools

Staff Reporter, Dibrugarh: As Assam reels under an intense heatwave, several students collapsed during school hours in Dibrugarh on Friday, raising serious concerns over student safety and administrative preparedness. At least three students—one each from B.L. Beria Saraswati Shishu Mandir and R.K. Academy—were rushed to hospital, with one currently in critical condition at Shankardev Hospital. The alarming incidents took place in the absence of any prior heat-related guidelines or Standard Operating Procedures for schools, drawing widespread criticism from parents and educationists. The lack of precautionary measures, despite soaring temperatures, has put a spotlight on the risks faced by school children during extreme weather. Following the incidents, the District Elementary Education Office, with approval from the District Commissioner, has swiftly implemented revised school timings in an effort to shield students from peak heat hours. The order, issued by Dr. Samiron Bora, Inspector of Schools and District Elementary Education Officer, comes into immediate effect from June 13. The rescheduled hours apply to all government, provincialised, and private educational institutions across the district. Alongside the change in school hours, authorities have also directed schools to suspend all physical and outdoor activities until further notice. The move is aimed at preventing further heat-related health emergencies and ensuring the well-being of students as the region continues to experience dangerously high temperatures. The revised timings will remain in force until further instructions are issued by the administration.
