Sonam Raghuvanshi claims she was drugged

News Desk, Ghazipur/Indore/Shillong: The murder of 28-year-old Raja Raghuvanshi, who went missing during his honeymoon in Meghalaya last month, has taken a dramatic turn with his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi — the prime suspect — surfacing mysteriously at a roadside eatery in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district. According to Uttar Pradesh Police, 24-year-old Sonam claimed she was drugged and had no recollection of how she ended up at Kashi Dhaba in the Nandganj area around 2:30 am on Monday. She reportedly borrowed a phone from the eatery owner to video call her cousin in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, informing him she was unwell and stranded. The cousin immediately alerted Indore Police, who passed on the information to their counterparts in UP. Simultaneously, the dhaba owner, sensing something suspicious, alerted the local police control room. A police team from Nandganj reached the spot swiftly and took Sonam into custody. Though she revealed her identity, she refused to provide further details. Claiming to be ill, she was taken to a hospital for a medical check-up and later shifted to a one-stop centre that offers temporary shelter and support to women affected by violence. Sources in the police said CCTV footage from around the dhaba is being reviewed to verify Sonam's claim that she had been drugged and brought there without her knowledge. “So far, no evidence has emerged to indicate that she was brought there by someone else,” said a senior police officer. The murder case had already drawn national attention. Raja and Sonam, both residents of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were reported missing in May during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. Raja's body was found earlier this month, along with the suspected murder weapon. Last week, three men from Madhya Pradesh were arrested in connection with the murder.
Investigators believe that 21-year-old Raj Kushwaha, a friend of Sonam, orchestrated the killing with her alleged involvement. The Madhya Pradesh Police Crime Branch told media on Monday that the murder appeared to have been planned just days after the couple’s wedding. The motive and circumstances behind the murder — and Sonam’s puzzling reappearance hundreds of kilometers away — remain at the center of the ongoing investigation. Meghalaya Police, leading the murder probe, reached Ghazipur on Monday afternoon, approached the court, and secured a three-day transit remand to take Sonam back for further questioning. Meanwhile, Amitabh Yash, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Uttar Pradesh, said UP Police would provide full cooperation to the Meghalaya authorities. The case continues to raise troubling questions about motive, planning, and the possible involvement of more individuals. As investigations intensify across three states, police are under mounting pressure to uncover the full truth behind the shocking death of Raja Raghuvanshi.
