Shoot-at-sight orders in Dhubri: CM Dr. Sarma takes stern stand

Selim SK, Dhubri: In a dramatic escalation of law enforcement directives, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday issued shoot-at-sight orders in Dhubri district against anyone found disturbing public peace, particularly those engaging in stone-pelting under the cover of darkness. The Chief Minister, accompanied by Assam Director General of Police (DGP) G.P. Singh, landed in Dhubri via helicopter early Friday morning to personally assess the situation following recent communal tensions. His visit included a tour of sensitive locations, including the Hanuman temple in Ward No. 3, where banned meat was reportedly seized earlier this week. Addressing the media, CM Sarma made it clear that his government would not tolerate any attempt to disrupt communal harmony in the region. “If any miscreant is found disturbing peace or involved in violence, especially during the night, the administration is directed to open fire immediately,” he said. He further announced that he would remain in Dhubri during the upcoming Eid-al-Adha celebrations, stating, “If needed, I will even stay at the temple to ensure peace prevails.” The Chief Minister also condemned the appearance of three posters in Dhubri containing pro-Bangladesh slogans, claiming foreign interference in local unrest. “A particular force from Bangladesh has been active here for the past seven days. This third force will be crushed with a heavy hand,” Sarma declared. To restore order, the administration has deployed a massive security presence, including personnel from the Rapid Action Force (RAF), CRPF, Assam Police, and Assam Police Battalion (APBN). CM Sarma has also instructed the district authorities to arrest all individuals with pending Non-Bailable Warrants. On the issue of cattle transportation during Eid, the CM noted a significant spike in cattle movement from West Bengal. “More cattle have arrived this year compared to previous years. Strict action will be taken against those bringing in excess cattle,” he warned. With the situation in Dhubri remaining tense, the Chief Minister’s strong message underscores the state government's zero-tolerance policy towards any attempts at communal disturbance ahead of the religious festival.
