National Footballer Durga Boro Bids Farewell

A Correspondent, Kokrajhar: National footballer Durga Boro officially announced his retirement on Saturday, bringing down the curtain on a celebrated career that spanned major tournaments including the Indian Super League and the Subroto Cup. His farewell was marked by an emotional and grand ceremony at Kokrajhar’s SAI Stadium, where fans, teammates, and dignitaries paid tribute to the sporting icon. The event, jointly organised by the Bodoland Territorial Council Government and the Assam Football Association, drew hundreds who came to honour one of Assam’s most accomplished footballers. Boro’s journey from the grassroots leagues of Assam to the national stage has made him a beacon of inspiration, particularly for young talent in the Bodoland region. The evening's highlight was an exhibition match between Assam Eleven FC and Bodoland FC, featuring Boro’s final appearance on the pitch. Playing alongside former teammates and friends, the veteran striker gave an emotional performance that reflected his enduring passion and commitment to the game. “Football has been my passion, my life. I am grateful for all the love and support over the years. This moment is emotional, but I retire with pride and joy,” Boro said during the ceremony. Tributes poured in from leaders and football officials. Member of Parliament Jayanta Basumatary called Boro “a source of pride for Assam and the Bodoland region,” while local MLA Lawrence Islary and Assam Football Association Secretary Sangrang Brahma praised his impact both on and off the field. “Durga Boro’s retirement marks the end of an era, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations of footballers,” said Brahma, hinting at future roles for Boro in youth development and football training initiatives. The farewell not only honoured Boro’s illustrious career but also highlighted the growing significance of football in Assam’s sporting culture, with hopes that his journey will motivate young athletes from rural and tribal communities to dream big.
