Minister Pijush Hazarika reviews Jagiroad Satellite Township Project progress

Guwahati: Assam Minister for Information & Public Relations, Water Resources, and Social Justice, Pijush Hazarika, chaired a high-level review meeting on Tuesday at Janata Bhawan to assess the progress of the ambitious Jagiroad Integrated Satellite Township project. The township, envisioned under Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma's leadership in 2022, aims to decongest Guwahati by creating a sustainable urban growth hub 55 km away in Morigaon district. The project spans over 2,000 acres, including the 550-acre site of the defunct Nagaon Paper Mill, and carries an estimated cost of ₹4,000 crore. Funding includes a ₹1,000 crore loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Key stakeholders present included GMDA Chairman Narayan Deka, senior officials, and planning experts. Minister Hazarika emphasized timely execution, community inclusion — particularly of the local Tiwa tribe — and ecological sustainability. Singapore-based Surbana Jurong has been appointed master planner. The township will allocate 40% of its land to industrial use, 20% to green spaces, and include residential, healthcare, educational zones, and MICE facilities. Anchored by the upcoming ₹27,000 crore Tata semiconductor plant expected to generate 27,000 jobs, the development also features an Electronics City and a Japanese Industrial Township. The Assam government has already sanctioned ₹500 crore for core infrastructure, including a ₹111 crore water project. Major completion is targeted within three years starting from 2024.
