A Correspondent, Guwahati: In a major crackdown on employment fraud, Assam Police on June 7 arrested four individuals, including a college lecturer, for allegedly orchestrating a fake job racket linked to the upcoming Tata semiconductor manufacturing unit at Jagiroad in Morigaon district.According to police officials, the accused were involved in duping several job seekers across Morigaon and Nagaon districts by promising them employment in the high-profile semiconductor project in exchange for large sums of money.The operation was allegedly led by Tarikul Ahmed, who posed as an engineer associated with the Tata project. Police revealed that Ahmed and his accomplices created fake WhatsApp groups to lure unemployed youths with promises of high-paying jobs. Victims were made to believe they were being recruited through official channels, with the scammers even going so far as to produce forged appointment letters, interview notifications, and other fabricated documentation.Among those arrested was a lecturer from an Economics department of a college in Nagaon district, whose involvement in the scam has shocked the local academic community. The other three accused also played key roles in deceiving job aspirants, police added.An investigation into the scam uncovered that significant sums of money were funneled into the bank account of one of the accused, identified as Islam. The police are now tracing the flow of these funds and probing whether more people are linked to the racket.Authorities suspect that hundreds may have been targeted by the group, and they are urging any additional victims to come forward."This is a serious case of organized fraud exploiting the hopes of unemployed youth," a police official said. "We appeal to the public to be extremely cautious, always verify the legitimacy of job offers, and immediately report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station."The arrests have sent shockwaves across the region, particularly as Assam celebrates the establishment of the Tata semiconductor unit, a milestone in the state’s industrial development.
