Diljit faces backlash over casting of Pakistani actress in Sardaar Ji 3

Mumbai: Popular Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh is under fire on social media after unveiling the trailer for his upcoming film Sardaar Ji 3, which features Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in the lead role. The casting decision has sparked a wave of outrage among Indian audiences, given the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan. The trailer, shared on Dosanjh’s Instagram on Monday, announced that the film would release overseas on June 27, with no India release planned. The post was captioned: “Sardaar Ji 3 releasing 27th June OVERSEAS only. FADH LAO BHOOND DIAN LATTAN.” Since its release, the post has been met with fierce criticism. Social media platforms have been flooded with comments accusing Dosanjh of disregarding national sentiment and being insensitive to the current geopolitical climate. Critics have questioned his decision to collaborate with a Pakistani actor so soon after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam and India’s subsequent Operation Sindoor on May 7, which targeted terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Many users have condemned Dosanjh for what they perceive as betrayal of his roots and the Punjabi film industry. One viral comment on X read, “May we witness the most embarrassing downfall of Diljit Dosanjh in the history of public embarrassments... a kind of downfall that his PR could never salvage.” Another user remarked, “He never stands up for Punjab, and now he brings a Pakistani actress into a Punjabi film?” The controversy is also linked to recent digital restrictions, with Indian users unable to access many Pakistani celebrities’ social media profiles, including Hania Aamir’s. Despite growing outrage, Dosanjh and the film’s producers have yet to issue any official statement. The trailer remains available exclusively on the actor’s Instagram, with no uploads on Indian video platforms to date.
