Staff Reporter, Guwahati: In response to the worsening flood situation triggered by continuous heavy rainfall, Assam’s Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Jayanta Mallabaruah, conducted an inspection of several flood-affected localities across Guwahati on Friday. During his visit, Minister Mallabaruah confirmed that five lives have been lost in rain-related incidents, including three victims of a tragic landslide in the Chapaidong area. “Guwahati has been receiving intense rainfall for the past 2–3 days. Waterlogging has severely disrupted normal life. We are making every effort to resolve the issue and provide relief,” he stated while speaking to the media. The minister highlighted the impact of unplanned urbanization, especially in areas like Juripar. “The Juripar area was originally a river. Due to unplanned development, it has now turned into a drain carrying water from Meghalaya. We are considering converting the stretch into a road-cum-drain that will ultimately channel water to the Silsako Beel,” he added. Relief and rescue operations are ongoing across the city. Urban local bodies and disaster response teams have been deployed to clear blocked drains, assist stranded residents, and distribute emergency supplies. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable zones to stay alert and report any signs of landslides or heavy water accumulation to the nearest control rooms.
